Waukon State Bank to host June 23 shredding event to help members of the community protect personal information

Identity theft is a significant problem and if it has not happened to someone personally, then odds are they probably know someone who has been victimized. While identity theft can happen to anyone, there are some things individuals can do to reduce the risk of having it happen to them. Proper disposal, at the right time, of documents and items that contain personal, confidential information is key to protection.

Waukon State Bank offers a free shredding service once a month to help community members safely dispose of their confidential information. Some of the following items that may contain personal information should be considered for shredding, once their recommended retention has passed: bank statements, expired credit or debit cards, credit card offers, paycheck stubs, canceled checks from years past, medical or legal information, along with anything that contains an individual's financial information or personal identification, such as a social security number or signature.

Types of important documents that should not be shred, but rather keep secured, include, but are not limited to, birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce papers, death certificates, military records, social security cards,  copies of wills, among others.

The next free shredding service is scheduled for Friday, June 23 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Waukon State Bank’s main lobby, located at 22 West Main Street in Waukon. For more information or additional questions about the service or what can or should be shred, community members can call the bank at 563-568-3451.
