Joyce Knox

Joyce A. Knox, 74, of Waukon died Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 20 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Joyce Ann Knox was born December 12, 1942 in Waukon, the daughter of Melvin and Eleanor (Stock) Nolting. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School.

October 8, 1966, Joyce married Eugene Knox at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. At that time, Gene was in the military and the couple lived in North Carolina; once he was discharged, they moved to Cedar Rapids where they had a rental business until 1974, when they moved back to Waukon. They have resided in Waukon ever since. For 30 years, Joyce was the Allamakee County Deputy Treasurer; she enjoyed this job and often spoke of the many people she got to know through work.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and the VFW Auxiliary. Joyce loved genealogy and spent hours compiling research; she had 15 giant binders of family information and photos. She also enjoyed collecting bells, playing rummy and bingo, and doing jigsaw puzzles (the more pieces, the better). She also liked baking cookies and always had Werther’s hard candies to hand out.

She and Gene owned a cabin on the river in Lansing for a few years but then decided to purchase a camper and park it at the Red Barn in Lansing. They were at the camper most weekends and made many new friends. They also spent many hours on their boat fishing.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Gene, of Waukon; her two children, Steve (Amy) Knox of Decorah and Pam Benjegerdes of Waukon; seven grandchildren, Carrie (Brady) Waldron, Travis Knox, Troy (Ashley) Knox, Brent (Betsy) Benjegerdes, Britany (Kevin Blume) Benjegerdes, and Brea and Brooke Benjegerdes; 12 great-grandchildren, Willow and River Waldron, Bliss and Lucey Knox, Jayden, Parker and Logan Knox, Gus Benjegerdes, Skylar, Emma and Grayson Blume, and Brynn Benjegerdes; a sister, LaVonne (Ernest) Palas of Waukon; and three sisters-in-law, Faye Nolting of Waukon, Karen Knox of Cedar Rapids and Elvina Knox of Blaine, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-granddaughter, Angel Waldron; her brother, Gary Nolting; and two brothers-in-law, James and Gerald Knox.

Honorary casketbearers were Joyce's great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Travis Knox, Troy Knox, Brent Benjegerdes, Brady Waldron, Chad Nolting and Greg Palas.
