Girls on Fire win gold medal for third consecutive year ...

June 23, eight ladies from the Harpers Ferry Fireflies team traveled to Des Moines to partake in the Iowa Senior Games, participating in the free throw shooting contest, Around the World, and in the afternoon they participated in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament under the name of Girls on Fire. In the morning contests, Judy Kelly of Prairie du Chien, WI won a bronze medal in the free throw contest for her age group. Sherry Adney of McGregor won the gold medal for her age group in the free throw contest, and Georgia Jones of McGregor won a gold medal in the free throw contest and a silver medal in the Around the World contest in her age group. In the afternoon event, the Girls on Fire placed first in a hotly-contested 3-on-3 tournament. The three teams placing in the medals each won two games and lost one. The Girls on Fire beat the Dream Team (a combined team with ladies from the Lady Redbirds of Carlisle and the Honey Bees from Ankeny) in an overtime game, 32-27, before being beaten by the Model T’s from Center Point, 23-30. The last game was against the Mustangs from Monroe and the Girls on Fire won by a score of 20-15. The tie breaker for the contest was decided on defensive points scored, and because the Girls on Fire allowed the lowest total amount of points scored, 72 points, they were awarded the gold medal, followed by the Model T’s and the Dream Team. A banquet was held Friday evening before the start of the Granny Basketball Tournament Saturday morning. Pictured above are members of the Girls on Fire.
