Fourth annual Firecracker 5K Walk/Run hosted by Harpers Ferry Boosters, Inc.

The fourth annual Firecracker 5K Walk/Run hosted by Harpers Ferry Boosters, Inc. in Harpers Ferry Saturday, July 1 was considered a tremendous success with 270 participants registered from across the state of Iowa and six other states from across the United States. Each participant received a green t-shirt with the Firecracker emblem and a list of sponsors on the back.

The racers were welcomed by Harpers Ferry City Councilman Don Gibson, and Trekman Racing was used to assist and manage electronic registration and timing which enhanced the process and provided the racers/walkers with their individual times and ranking by age groups and overall. The 5K race featured an overall winner in the Female and Male divisions and gold, silver and bronze medals in seven age categories within the Female and Male divisions.

The overall winner in the Female division was Macy Niewoehner of Hawkeye with a time of 21:21, and the overall winner in the Male division was Hunter Lavallee of Cedar Falls with a time of 17:54. Niewoehner is now a three-time winner of the event.

Winners in the various age categories included the following:

Female 14 & under: Gold - Molly Niewoehner, Hawkeye;  Silver - Paige Hansmeier, Waukon; Bronze - Hailey Bresnahan, Lansing.
Male 14 & under: Gold - Chance Adam, Calmar; Silver - Talan Lafrentz, Denver; Bronze – Jack O’Neill, Decorah.
Female 15-19: Gold - Macy Niewoehner, Hawkeye; Silver - Annie Place, Denver; Bronze - Megan Niewoehner, Hawkeye.
Male 15-19: Gold - Hunter Lavallee, Cedar Falls; Silver - Dalton Godfrey, Cedar Falls.
Female 20-29:  Gold – Jacqueline Welch, Waukon;  Silver – Katy Farley, Cedar Falls;  Bronze – Jamie Farley, Cedar Falls.
Male 20-29:  Gold – Bradley Glisczinski, Milwaukee, WI;  Silver – Michael Kramer, New Hampton;  Bronze – Marshall Sinnwell, New Hampton.
Female 30-39:  Gold – Trish Wilkins, Waukon;  Silver – Amanda Webb, Decorah;  Bronze – Brooke Weighner, Harpers Ferry.
Male 30-39:  Gold – Dan Bischoff, Bettendorf;  Silver – Jeremy Gomez, Harpers Ferry; Bronze – Brian Brandsmeier, North Liberty.
Female 40-49:  Gold – Gina Niewoehner, Hawkeye; Silver – Kelly Kerian, Cresco;  Bronze – Amy Welch, Waukon.
Male 40-49: Gold – Tim Godfrey, Cedar Falls; Silver – Kelly Mueller, Cedar Rapids;  Bronze – Chet Bachman, Monona.
Female 50-59:  Gold – Sandy Sabelka, Denver;  Silver – Michele Bienfang, Cedar Falls;  Bronze – Kim Pleggenkuhle, Hawkeye.
Male 50-59:  Gold – Kevin Greener, Mount Hope, WI;  Silver – Dan Byrnes, Waukon;  Bronze – Kim Welch, Waukon.
Female 60 and over:  Gold – Cindy Campbell, McGregor; Silver – Mary Moen, Decorah; Bronze – Jenny Schulte, USA.
Male 60 and over:  Gold – Dave Farmer, Postville; Silver – Lee Smith, Cedar Rapids;  Bronze – Dale Reicks, New Hampton.

The event also featured a number of 5K walkers and involved several families and groups who enjoyed the spirit of the Fourth of July holiday, according to race organizers. Following the 5K race, small children raced on the lawn of the church, enjoying the event and prizes received.

Proceeds from the race will be used to support and enhance projects in Harpers Ferry. Plans are already underway to conduct the fifth annual July Firecracker 5K Walk/Run in 2018. Pictures can be seen on the Harpers Ferry Boosters, Inc. website at www.harpersferryboostersinc.org.
