Have A Heart Day event providing free dental care to local youth

As February begins, Have A Heart Day is not an unfamiliar event to run across in newspapers and on the radio as many individuals and families in the area have welcomed this event dedicated to providing free services to the communities youth. For 28 years, Waukon Dental and Family Dentistry Associates of Monona (Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien, P.C. is celebrating 24 years) have continued this service and are excited for the upcoming celebration this year.

Over the years, the doctors and staff have provided this opportunity for many area residents. It then was evolved into focusing on area youth ages four to 18 who have not recently seen a dentist, in order for them to receive free dental work. This year will be no exception as the event is scheduled for this Saturday, February 10 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Through this annual event, many doctors and staff have felt impacted by the effect this day can have on a child’s health and on the community as a whole. While this event is during Valentine’s season, it also is celebrated during one of the most important dental months, National Children’s Dental Health Month.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, more than 50% of children will be affected by tooth decay before the age of five. Instilling good oral health habits at an early age, as well as scheduling regular dental visits, helps children get a good start on a lifetime course of healthy teeth and gums.

This event is one of the opportunities for area providers to give back to the community by providing services that are needed. This service is free of charge and requires no financial proof. Children ages four to 18 who have not recently seen a dentist will be able to receive a complete dental examination and consultation. Cavity detecting x-rays, fillings, extractions and sealants are some of the possible services provided on this day.

The doctors and staff encourage local youth and families to take advantage of this opportunity or alert others they know who may benefit. The dental offices feel strongly about this free service that allows children to be seen now and also teaches and encourages proper oral hygiene to be continued, as it can impact the children’s future health.

Due to time and room constraints, Waukon Dental, Family Dentistry Associates of Monona and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien, P.C. may have to limit the number of services per patient. To ensure a visit, call ahead and make an appointment at one of the three locations.

“We look forward to providing dental services to the area communities. We have five doctors plus many of our dental team members working this day so that we can see more people on our annual Have A Heart Day,” says Dr. Mark Fohey.
