April is observed as National Volunteer Appreciation month and to celebrate local volunteer efforts, Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) hosted a volunteer appreciation reception for its home-delivered and congregate meal site volunteers Tuesday, April 17 at the Senior Meal Site located at the Wellness Center in Waukon. Volunteers were recognized with a ceremony and a certificate.

“Volunteers are vital to running the meal program in Waukon,” said Kristie Wiltgen, Regional Coordinator for Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging. “They deliver 19-22 hot, ready-to-eat, nutritious meals to homebound seniors Monday-Friday as well as keep the congregate meal site running day to day. Nona Sawyer takes the lead on organizing the volunteers that deliver the meals to homes daily, and she also takes it upon herself to deliver meals on a regular basis. Betty  Troendle manages all the duties at the congregate site by taking meal reservations and serving and catering to everyone at the Senior Site. It is heartwarming to see the collaboration of the community that provides these spirited volunteers. Without them, we would not be able to have this valuable service. For some recipients, these volunteers may be the only constant contact in their daily lives. NEI3A wants to honor their efforts in serving our aged population in Allamakee County”.
