BackPack Program offers weekend meals to qualifying ACSD students

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) is once again partnering with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to offer the BackPack Program to students in order to provide meals for kids when school meals aren’t available. Any student, 18 years old and younger, who qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program in the school district may participate in the BackPack Program.

Parents and guardians of ACSD students may apply for the free and reduced lunch program at any time throughout the school year. The applications are available through the school secretaries. Families are encouraged to apply for assistance if they are in need.

Siblings at home who are not old enough to go to school yet can also be included in this program. Working with donations from the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and local donations, Gail Hillsheim’s Level 2 students in the ACSD pack bags of food with two meals of breakfast foods and two meals of lunch foods for students to eat over the weekend. Items can include fruit snacks, juice boxes, pop-top meals and granola bars, among other things. The food bags are distributed to students at the end of the day each Friday during the school year.
