It was its only scheduled game for this past week, and it ended up being a lopsided victory over an overmatched opponent, but no other game this season will likely hold a deeper meaning than the Waukon girls basketball team’s Friday, December 7 home game vs. Oelwein, as the Lady Indians christened the newly dedicated Dave Schoeberlein Gymnasium with a 57-19 rout of the visiting Huskies.

Prior to the start of the ballgame, a dedication ceremony was held to name the Waukon High School gym in honor of former long-time Waukon girls basketball assistant coach Dave Schoeberlein, whose untimely passing September 28, 2017 took away the most dedicated coach at any level in the history of the program, cutting short an already impactful coaching and teaching career in which he positively touched the lives of so many students and athletes. Lettering over the gym’s large scoreboard and west entrance double doors, along with a plaque honoring Mr./Coach Schoeberlein, were unveiled between the combined freshman/JV game and the start of the varsity game by current and former coaches of the program, with the Schoeberlein family all in attendance for the event. Photos and further details of the event can be found on Page 13A of this week’s edition of The Standard.

The Lady Indians were next scheduled to play at Class 3A 11th-rated Crestwood in a battle of Class 3A top 15-rated Northeast Iowa Conference squads Tuesday, December 11 before hosting Class 4A 14th-rated Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, December 14 in a girl/boy doubleheader. A busy final week prior to the holiday break will see the Waukon basketball girls host Clayton Ridge Monday, December 17, play at Caledonia, MN Tuesday, December 18 and then host Decorah Friday, December 21 to wrap up the 2018 portion of the Tribe’s schedule.
