Edward Helgeson
Edward Helgeson, age 81, of Decorah died Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at his home in Decorah. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah Monday, July 29 with Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Interment was at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah.
Edward Elmer Helgeson was born August 14, 1937, the son of Elmer and Mary (Burroughs) Helgeson near Dorchester. He attended country school in Pleasant Township where his mother, Mary, was the teacher. He graduated from Decorah High School.
He was married to Janice Nesset and together they had five children, Sharyl, Joe, Jeff, John and Jim. They later divorced. He married Theresa Howe May 28, 1988 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Ed worked at Calmar Manufacturing for many years and had various other jobs before that. He enjoyed fishing, wood working in his shop at home, antique cars and spending time with his friends and family.
Ed is survived by his wife, Theresa; his children: Sharyl (David) Haugen of Decorah, Joe (Roxanne) Helgeson of Ossian, Jeff Helgeson of Decorah and John Helgeson of Cresco; his step-children: Sharon (Robert) Barr of Janesville, Diane (Scott) Pederson of Rossville, Gerald (Michelle) Donahue of Waukon, John (Anna) Donahue of Amarillo, TX and Dale (Pie) Donahue of Waukon; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his sister, June Beer of Cedar Rapids; his in-laws: Beverly Howe of Lansing, Rita Jones of Janesville, WI, Dorothy (Orville) Bratrud of Waukon, George (Carol) Howe of Monona and Janice Helgeson of Decorah; and a step-son-in-law, Randy Lier of Waterville.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mary (Burroughs) Helgeson; his son, Jim Helgeson; his step-daughter, Joanne Lier; his siblings, Norbert (Karen) Helgeson and Dick Helgeson; and his brothers-in-law, Ray Beer, Robert Jones and Robert Howe.
Casketbearers were Danial Beer, David Beer, Duane Beer, Dennis Beer, Ed Langreck and Ray Koshatka. Schluter - Balik Funeral Home of Decorah assisted the family with arrangements.
