Family and friends of Lorelei Brink of Waterville will be hosting a benefit event for her this Saturday, November 23 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The benefit event is geared toward raising funds to help pay for medical bills and other life adjustments that may develop for the 10-month-old daughter of JayR and Jerrica (Milton) Brink of Waterville.

February 28 of this year, Lorelei went into cardiac arrest from Influenza A on her way to the Emergency Room in La Crosse, WI. The medical team was able to stabilize her and she was airlifted to Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, MN, where she was  put on ECMO, respiratory life support and dialysis. Her heart and lungs have made miraculous recoveries and her kidneys continue to heal.

During the arrest, Lorelei sustained a severe, widespread brain injury. The future is unknown for her, but the doctors are predicting that she will not be able to walk, talk, see or eat and will be minimally responsive.

However, she continues to make progress towards overcoming that prognosis every day. She is rolling over, making sounds and smiling. Her vision is showing improvement and she loves to listen to her brother and sisters, Gibson (8), Veda (4) and Elsie (2).

Lorelei will continue to work with a team of doctors in Rochester, MN. She receives physical and occupation therapy weekly at home and will begin traveling to Cedar Falls monthly for three days of intensive therapy. Her parents are hopeful that, with all the intervention, she will have a bright future.

The benefit event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. Additional information about the event can be found in the advertisement in the Events and Entertainment section on Page 5A in this same edition of The Standard.

An event account has also been established at Kerndt Brothers Bank. Anyone wishing to donate to the benefit event or seeking additional information may contact Jackie Moody at 563-568-9707 or Michaela Collins at 563-880-8030.
