Elva Steffenson

Elva C. Steffenson, 96, of Rochester, MN went home to be with the Lord May 2, 2020. There will be a private family visitation and graveside service at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 810 3rd Ave. SE, Rochester, MN.

Elva was born March 7, 1924 in Waterville to George and Ruth (Jacobson) Sorenson. She attended Waterville Elementary School, Waterville High School and Waukon Junior College. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945. She taught High School English in Calmar from 1945-1946 and also taught elementary music in Waterville, Harpers Ferry and Dorchester schools for 10 years. She later taught elementary music in the Rochester Public Schools in Minnesota for 17 years.

Elva was a member of the Minnesota Education Association, the South East Retired Educators Association of Minnesota, the Rochester Area Retired Educators and the Fidelis chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and held many offices in Sons of Norway #47 Kristiania Lodge. She served as past president of the Ringerike-Drammen District Lag of America. She enjoyed attending family reunions and being a part of the many Norwegian District Lags to gather information for family genealogy.

Elva married Donald Mouw in 1946, and they were later divorced. She married Walter Steffenson in 1968.

She is survived by her children: Sue (Don) Rogen of Cedar Rapids, step-son Greg (Jean) Steffenson of Onamia, MN and step-daughter Renell Steffenson (Greg Walker) of Buffalo, MN; her grandchildren, Cathy (Jason) Mahan, Barb Rogen, Nathan Steffenson, Matthew (Amanda) Steffenson, Chris (Allison) Steffenson and Mia Steffenson; and her great grandchildren, Nichole and Hayley Mahan, Ted, Walter and Andie Steffenson, and Cal Steffenson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Steffenson; a son, Dean Mouw; and a granddaughter, Kristine Rogen.
