Waukon High School Summer Prom being planned for July 25

Students attending need to register through online link

The Summer Prom event that several local parents have been working on since mid-April is being planned to take place Saturday, July 25 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon for Waukon High School students who completed their junior or senior year this past school year, along with their guests. Committee members have been communicating with Allamakee County officials, who say that with the locations and events that have now been opened up and the easing of many restrictions in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, this event should be able to happen as well.

With doors opening at 6 p.m., the evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a catered meal being provided at no cost to the students by Rich Schulte of Schulte’s BBQ & Catering of Waukon. The menu will include roast pork with cheesy potatoes. The committee is looking for parent volunteers to help provide salads and desserts.

At 8 p.m., there will be a Grand March outside (weather permitting) on the west side of the pavilion for parents and community members to attend. Following the Grand March, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the dance will begin with music provided by Eric Kelly from KNEI. The dance will last approximately 90 minutes until 10 p.m.

Post-Prom activities are being discussed and planned at this time, but the exact details have not been worked out as of yet. The committee is also working on having some Post-Prom prizes for the students as well, but again those details have not all been worked out as of yet.

The committee is grateful to Dr. Dustin Rounds for putting together the fundraiser in April to provide funding for this event. The group is also thankful to the family that provided a private donation to pay for the rental of the Fairgrounds Pavilion. The committee understands that the COVID-19 virus has presented some financial challenges to many families and hopes to provide a full night of Prom-like activities that require little if no expenses on the part of the students. For anyone who wishes to further contribute to the Summer Prom event, free will donation cans have been placed at all three banks in Waukon, FreedomBank, Kerndt Brothers Bank and Waukon State Bank.

Students were asked to fill out a Google® form in May to see if there would be enough interest for this event. A new link is now set up for students to register for this event so the committee will know how much food and prize arrangements to plan for the evening.

Any student who plans to attend (even if they did not fill out the original survey) is asked to fill out the registration form. The form to register for this event can be found at: https://bit.ly/2VoloTf. The registration form should be filled out by July 10.

The committee does want to make sure all participants know that the group working on this event, along with the Allamakee County Fair Board, cannot guarantee that this will be a COVID-free event. Parents are permitting their child to participate in the Summer Prom at their own risk.

Hand sanitizer will be available at the event. Students may choose to wear a mask, as they feel necessary. As all of the parents working on this event have children of this age group, they want to provide a positive and fun event for the kids, so they encourage all students to do the most they can to keep everyone safe.
