Lorraine K. Adam, 98, of Waukon died Thursday, July 16, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Private family funeral services were held at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon Monday, July 20 with burial at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Cemetery, rural Waukon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon and condolences may be sent to Maureen Mahoney at 203 First Avenue NW, Waukon, IA 52172.
Lorraine Kathryn Adam was born July 2, 1922 in rural Waukon, the daughter of James L. and Mary (Sweeney) Welch. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon. Lorraine attended Lycurgus Country School and graduated from Waukon High School in normal training.
December 31, 1941, she married Leonard John Adam at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church. Lorraine taught country school in rural Monona and Harpers Ferry for a few years. She and Leonard farmed near Harpers Ferry and then moved to a farm in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon. After retiring from the farm, they moved into Waukon where Lorraine worked at the Sears Catalog Store and later was the secretary for RSVP.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was an “adopted grandparent” for 20 years at West Elementary School in Waukon. Lorraine enjoyed playing cards, ballroom and square dancing, and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children: Maureen Mahoney of Waukon; Marilyn Adam and her husband Ralph Tauke of Stoddard, WI, and John (Lois) Adam, Jim (Linda) Adam and Bill (Cheryl) Adam, all of Waukon; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Leona Welsh of La Crosse, WI; and many special nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard, who died in 2001; four brothers: Clem, James and his wife Joan, Ambrose and his wife Phyllis, and Ralph and his wife JoAnn.
