Waukon football team racks up 50-0 lead running just 10 plays of offense on the way to 58-12 Homecoming victory over Oelwein

Productive stretch for Hemann ... Waukon football junior Braden Hemann brings down the Oelwein quarterback for a first half sack in the Indians’ 58-12 Homecoming domination of the Huskies Friday, September 18. On either side of this sack, Hemann first caught a 43-yard touchdown pass and followed up the sack by recovering a fumble on this same Oelwein series to set up another Indian touchdown and a 50-0 Indian lead at the halftime break. Indians’ game this Friday canceled due to continued COVID-19 concerns at Independence

For most teams, opening a game with 10 plays and finding the end zone would be considered a pretty good opening possession. But for the Waukon football team, after running just 10 plays of offense in their Friday, September 18 Homecoming game against Oelwein, they had already built a 50-0 advantage over the visiting Huskies.

After returning the game’s opening kick-off for a touchdown, the grid Tribe took advantage of five Oelwein turnovers in the Huskies’ first six series, capitalizing on all five of those miscues and denying a fourth down conversion on the only other Oelwein possession of the first half. That capitalization came on a very efficient and opportunistic offensive attack that saw the Indians score on their very first play in four of their ensuing drives, and taking only two and four plays to find the end zone in their only other two possessions of that first half, putting the 35-point margin continuous clock into effect just over a minute into the second quarter and building a 50-0 lead by halftime.

The Indians were next scheduled to play at Independence this Friday, September 25, but that game was canceled Monday, September 21 due to the Independence football program continuing to deal with COVID-19 exposure. The Mustangs were unable to play their Homecoming game against Crestwood this past Friday, September 18 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Indian coaching staff will need to make a decision on whether to pursue a replacement game for this Friday - if there would happen to be an opponent even available.
