Split of home doubleheader with Oelwein accounts for Waukon softball team’s lone, high-powered win in six games this past week

First-time homers help Tribe to win ... The Waukon softball pair of sophomore first baseman Kiana Krueger (#11 in photo above) and freshman center fielder Kaitlyn Krambeer (#10 in photo below) get mobbed by their teammates after they both hit the first homeruns of their varsity softball careers in the Indians’ 9-7 home victory over Oelwein Wednesday, June 23. The two combined to drive in five of the Tribe’s nine runs in the win, joining senior shortstop Annika Headington in launching a pitch out of the ballpark in the victory, with Krueger hitting a two-run round-tripper in the second inning and Krambeer and Headington hitting a three-run and two-run bomb, respectively, in the decisive fourth inning of the contest. Mother Nature made this past week’s already busy schedule a little less busy for the Waukon softball team, as the Lady Indians had their Decorah Tournament scheduled for Saturday, June 26 rained out. Already playing a schedule of six games in five nights that included a pair of home doubleheaders, all of those six games being in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play, the softball Tribe was able to put just one of those in the win column.

The week started with a 4-1 loss at home to Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, June 21 before the Indians split a home doubleheader Wednesday, June 23 with Oelwein, winning the opener by a 9-7 result before falling in the nightcap, 6-3. The diamond Tribe then fell at Decorah Thursday, June 24, 13-3 in six innings before being swept by Charles City at home Friday, June 25 in a doubleheader rescheduled from May 27, falling by scores of 7-3 and 12-2. The Decorah Tournament the Indians were supposed to play in Saturday, June 26 was canceled due to rain.

Now holding a 10-17 overall season record that includes a 3-14 NEIC mark, the Lady Indians were next scheduled to play at Central Elkader Monday, June 28 before hosting Crestwood Thursday, July 1 to wrap up their regular season. The softball Tribe will then begin postseason tournament play Tuesday, July 6 hosting New Hampton in Class 3A Regional Tournament play.
