Letter to the Editor: Biden tax cut for families with children

To the Editor:

This month millions of U.S. families will receive as much as $300 a month per child under the Biden administration’s bold effort to help struggling families.  The Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan provides the largest Child Tax Credit ever and historic relief to the most working families ever - and most families will automatically receive monthly payments without having to take any action.

Ninety-three percent of children under 18 qualify - that’s 669,000 Iowa kids. It is expected to lift thousands of Iowa children out of poverty.

The monthly Expanded Child Tax Credit payments of $250 per child age six to 17 and $300 per child under six will arrive via direct deposit for most families and by mail for some starting July 15. If you filed taxes for 2019 or 2020, or if you signed up to receive a stimulus check, you will get this tax relief automatically. If you did not make enough to file taxes, you can still get the funds. Families can check their eligibility and enroll at irs.gov.

Many families struggle to make ends meet. This child tax benefit will help offset the costs of raising kids. Iowa Senators Grassley and Ernst, as well Representative Hinson, voted against this broadly popular tax cut for most families with children. President Biden and the Democrats are looking out for everyday Americans.

Sincerely,
