Waukon football team uses balanced offense to power past Oelwein for 56-12 District 4 road win

by Perry Hesse

While the Oelwein Huskies were celebrating Homecoming Friday night, September 24, it was strictly a business trip for the Waukon Indians, who improved to 4-1 on the season with a 56-12 victory in that Class 2A District 4 match-up. That final result yielded the Indians’ highest point total of the season behind a fairly balanced attack providing almost 400 yards of total offense. Waukon collected 224 yards through the air along with 163 more on the ground, scoring multiple times via each method.

“Passing is largely about timing and that develops with more repetitions at game speed,” said Waukon football coach Chad Beermann of his team’s aerial attack that produced an average of nearly 38 yards per reception and scored on half of just six passing attempts on the night.

Holding a 4-1 season record that includes a perfect 2-0 start in Class 2A District 4 play, the Indians will now focus their attention on a visiting Dubuque Wahlert team this Friday, October 1. The Golden Eagles were once a strong 4A program before dropping to Class 3A and now becoming a large 2A school.

They have played a strong non-district schedule with games against West Delaware, Davenport Assumption, and Cedar Rapids Xavier to start their season and currently sit at just a 1-4 overall record. Their lone win was against fellow District 4 rival Union of LaPorte City, 24-7, two Friday ago, as the Golden Eagles come off a 50-33 loss to North Fayette Valley this past Friday, September 24.
