In what turned out to be the Waukon wrestling team’s only competition of the week, the wrestling Indians opened their dual meet and Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) schedule against one of the state’s best teams when Class 3A top-rated Waverly-Shell Rock came to town Thursday, December 9. Facing a Go-Hawk line-up that did not bring all of its highest-ranked grapplers to the mat, the Indians scored one of their highest recent point totals against Waverly-Shell Rock but surrendered five forfeits and five of the nine weight classes contested on the mat in falling by a 57-21 final result.

The mat Tribe book-ended the dual with its four wins, winning two of the first three matches contested on the mat and both of the final bouts. In between those winning pairs, the Indians gave up four of their five contested match losses, the other splitting the first two Tribe victories and all the Go-Hawk victories generating bonus points to go with the 30 points the Indians spotted Waverly-Shell Rock with their five forfeits.

The mat Tribe was also scheduled to compete at the Maquoketa Invitational Tournament Saturday, December 11, but the winter storm that blew through the area the night before prevented the Indians from making the trip. The Indians were next scheduled to host Decorah in a Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet Thursday, December 16 before competing in the Starmont Tournament Saturday, December 18. The Indians will wrap up the pre-holiday portion of their 2021-2022 schedule with a Tuesday, December 21 double dual at Fillmore Central High School in Minnesota also featuring South Winneshiek.

The wrestling Tribe will then return to the mat for a very busy first week of the new year, competing at Caledonia, MN Tuesday, January 4 and at Charles City Thursday, January 6 before participating in tournaments at Central Elkader Friday, January 7 and at Crestwood Saturday, January 8.
