Ronald Roese

Ronald H. Roese, 79, of Waukon died Saturday, February 5, 2022 at his home. Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Military honors will be held outside of the church following the service. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Pomeroy. Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 11 at Martin - Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.

Ronald Harold Roese was born January 6, 1943 in Omaha, NE, the son of Fredrick W. and Florence Ida (Petty) Roese. He grew up in Pomeroy, where he graduated from high school in 1961. Ron married Loretta Peters June 6, 1965 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pomeroy and they had one daughter, Dawn Elizabeth.

The couple settled in Pomeroy, then moved to Waukon in 1977. Ron was a hog buyer for the Rath Packing Company, first in Pomeroy then in Waukon, for 22 years. After Rath closed in 1984, he worked 18 years as a food inspector for the state of Iowa, retiring in 2009. Ron also served in the military as a surveyor in Vietnam from 1967-1968, was a volunteer fire fighter/ambulance attendant in Pomeroy, and also served on the Allamakee County Fair Board.

Ron enjoyed hunting in his younger years and fishing in northern Minnesota. He and Loretta were long time members of the Upper Iowa Saddle Club and went on many trail rides. They raised Arabian horses and looked forward to spring when the new babies would arrive. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Alicia and Christian, and treasured the time he spent with them. Ron was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Waukon.

Survivors include, Loretta, his wife of 55 years; his daughter, Dawn (Bill Saewert), of Waukon; two grandchildren: Alicia (John Budweg) of Ridgeway and Christian of Waukon; one brother, Rick (Mary Lee) Roese of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Roese of Pomeroy; and many very special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Florence; a brother, James F. Roese; his mother- and father-in-law, Herbert and June Peters; and a brother-in-law, John Peters.

Honorary urnbearers are Neil Barth, Margaret Hermeier, Merrill Jacobs, Kay Snitker, Ann Stone, Marvin and Marge Strike, Joe and Judy Sweeney, Glenn and Terri Kruger, and Bill Walsh. Urnbearers are Christian Wenthold and Alicia Waters.
