Don was born June 2, 1950, the fourth child of Cyril and Vi (Augedahl) Manning of Lansing. He graduated from Kee High School, Lansing in 1968. Don married Rose Mary Marti August 28, 1969 in Crystal Falls, MI.

Don worked as a body man for the Ford Garage and for Dave Moritz at Crash Control, Lansing. In 1973, he began as a machine operator for LaVern Christoffer. In 1975, Don went to work for Mueller Pipeline as a union machine operator. In 1984, Don began working as an operator for Dave Christoffer, until his early retirement.

Don always loved a good card game and he and Rose spent many hours cruising the back roads listening to OBGs. Don loved to fish and hunt, although unable to for many years due to health issues.
