Waukon’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter has been very busy this school year.  As chapter members prepare for their upcoming trip to the State Leadership Conference in Coralville March 31-April 2, FBLA students celebrated National Career & Technical Education Month in February with FBLA Week festivities and reflect on all of the achievements this school year.

Waukon FBLA students kicked off the year with its annual FBLA haunted park, selling over 800 admission tickets. Students hosted their rooms and ensured that all visitors had a fun and frightening night, utilizing teamwork to put together a great event that brought students together.

FBLA students also had many opportunities to give back to the community. Opportunities such as a can drive competition and volunteering to rake leaves through town proved to be a fun and productive experience for FBLA students to lend a helping hand in their community.

Waukon FBLA President Braxton Stewart has been an active member in FBLA’s community service throughout his high school career.  In regard to giving back to the community through FBLA, Stewart stated: “It has always been an honor to give back to the community that has supported and helped make us into the young adults that we are today.”

This winter, students had the opportunity to show off their business skills through silent auction baskets offered at basketball games and wrestling meets. Students put together silent auction baskets and allowed event attendees to place bids on their baskets. The funds raised are yet another community service opportunity for students as the money raised is being given to area families with additional health expenses.

During the upcoming State Leadership Conference (SLC), FBLA students are given the opportunity to compete in a multitude of events against other FBLA students across the state of Iowa. Waukon students can attend different business seminars and learn new business tactics from outstanding business leaders at the Conference. SLC has proven to be a great learning experience for Waukon FBLA, and Waukon students cannot wait for the opportunity to showcase their business skills in this setting.

To better prepare for the State Leadership Conference, 22 Waukon FBLA students competed in the District Leadership Conference this past January. Waukon’s chapter members were very successful at districts, even going so far as to place in the top three in each event that they participated in.

Waukon FBLA students have been very thankful for their successes within their chapter so far this year, and look forward to opportunities to compete at SLC. However, these students know that they could not have been this successful without the support of their advisors, school administrators, and countless community members who have made the 2021-2022 FBLA year possible. They are extremely grateful for the opportunities that Waukon’s giving community has provided them to learn and grow in their skills of professionalism and leadership.  Waukon’s Future Business Leaders of America looks forward to continuing their very successful year, all thanks to the support they have received from the community.
