Ultralight crash causes power outage in Glenwood Church area ...

Wednesday, June 29, at approximately 8:40 p.m., the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a plane crash near the intersection of Old Stage Road and Glenville Road in eastern Winneshiek County, near the Glenwood Lutheran Church. When deputies arrived at the scene, they located a Kitfox ultralight single-passenger aircraft in the northwest ditch of the intersection. The pilot, Thomas Lee Wandling, age 43, of Decorah was uninjured.

Wandling stated that he attempted to take flight from his pasture located southwest of the intersection and clipped the barbed wire fence which sent him into a power line causing him to crash the aircraft. The power line was damaged and caused a power outage for surrounding residents. The sheriff’s office was assisted by mienergy, Winneshiek County Ambulance, first responders, and Decorah Rescue.
