Leona Mooney

Leona K. Mooney, 94, of Lansing, formerly of New Albin, died Monday, August 22, 2022 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Friday, August 26 at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Sevcik officiating and burial in the church cemetery in rural Lansing.

Leona Kathryn Mooney was born January 4, 1928 in rural Waukon, the daughter of Joseph Leo and Mary Theresa (Ryan) O’Neill. She attended West Ridge country school in rural Waukon, graduated from Waukon High School in 1946, and attended college in La Crosse, WI, where she received her teaching certificate; later she took some classes at Winona State College. Leona taught in country schools in Allamakee County. February 21, 1955, she married Cyril Mooney at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church. After their children were born, she was a stay-at-home mom.

Leona was a member of Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church, where she was very active in the Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Homemaker’s ClHelenub and New Albin Card Club. Leona raised a big garden, enjoyed playing cards, sewing and working on crafts, and going for walks. Mostly, she loved spending time with her family. Leona had a vibrant personality that warmed the hearts of her family. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her son, Matthew (Rita) Mooney of New Albin; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Mooney of New Albin; five grandchildren, Kala, Jacob, Kristina, Johnathon and Heather Mooney; two sisters, Dorothy Mullarkey of Winterset and Margaret Ann Corrigan of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Emmet (Edna) O’Neill of Milwaukee, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cyril, who died in 2010; one daughter, Joanne Mooney; one son, Michael Mooney; two brothers, Robert and Bernard O’Neill; and three sisters, Mary Frances, Rita and Irene O’Neill.

Kyle Johnson served as an honorary casketbearer. Casketbearers were Johnathon, Jacob and Tim Mooney, Joe Mullarkey, Jerry Corrigan and Bob O’Neill.
