Waukon football team wraps up 10 tackles for loss, racks up over 400 yards of offense for 49-0 Happy Homecoming win over Oelwein

Accounts for five of seven touchdowns ... Waukon football senior quarterback Noah Hatlan breaks away from the Oelwein defense as fellow senior Isaac Cooper (#68) helps spring him with a block in the Indians’ 49-0 Homecoming victory over Oelwein Friday, September 23. Cooper and his offensive line teammates paved the way for 256 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground for the grid Tribe, including three of those tallies on five carries by Hatlan, while they also allowed Hatlan enough time to complete nine of 13 passes for two more touchdowns. Waukon High School celebrated its 2022 Homecoming this past week, and the Waukon football team provided plenty to celebrate in its Friday, September 23 game against Oelwein. With a Homecoming theme of “Hammer the Huskies,” the grid Tribe did just that with a 49-0 shut-out triumph that featured more than 400 yards of Indian offense while limiting the Oelwein visitors to just 76 yards, although that number was obviously impacted by the fact that the Huskies were missing some key personnel, both initially and as the game went on.

“We talked about focusing on the game all week,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann explained in relation to all the excitement and chaos of Homecoming Week. “Realizing there are many distractions that come with all the events, the kids did a good job focusing on the field. We temper our pleasure about the shut-out with the fact Oelwein came into the game missing their starting fullback and tailback, and we knocked their quarterback out of the game.”

Scoring on five of six possessions in the first half, including all three of its first quarter drives, the Indian offense amassed 428 yards of total offense on the night and was paced in its scoreboard production by senior quarterback Noah Hatlan, who was not only crowned as Homecoming King the night before but also ruled over the end zone as he accounted for five of the Tribe’s seven touchdowns on the night. The Indians racked up 172 yards through the air that resulted in two Hatlan touchdown passes, and he also scored three more on the ground while netting just 26 of the Indians’ 256 yards on the ground, with fellow senior Corbyn Palmer shouldering much of that rushing load with his 167 yards.

The Indians are next scheduled to travel to Dubuque this Friday, September 30 to take on Dubuque Wahlert in a game played at the Rock Bowl, the home football field of Loras College, in a match-up between the only two teams who are yet undefeated in Class 2A District 4 play. The Golden Eagles currently hold a 4-1 season record, with their lone loss coming to Class 4A undefeated Cedar Rapids Xavier and Wahlert posting District 4 wins of 42-7 at Union and a 48-14 Homecoming win over North Fayette Valley this past Friday.

“Wahlert has some really impressive speed on offense and defense,” Coach Beermann shared. “I expect turnovers to be a major factor. It will be important for us to finish drives on offense, and tackle well on defense.”
