Waukon football team takes control of Class 2A District 4 with 28-6 triumph at Dubuque Wahlert in battle of district unbeatens

In what was anticipated to be a thunder vs. lightning match-up, with the Waukon football team’s rumbling offense and defense facing the flashing speed of Dubuque Wahlert, the football Indians roared to a 28-6 dimming of those host Golden Eagles in a Friday, September 30 Class 2A District 4 match-up played at Loras College in Dubuque. With both teams entering the game undefeated in Class 2A District 4 play, the 2-3 grid Tribe established and maintained a calm, quiet control of the game from beginning to end to stake sole claim of the District 4 lead and take control of its own destiny in securing yet another District 4 championship.

“It was actually a combination of all three phases of the game,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said of his team’s controlling of the Wahlert speed threat, and thus, the ballgame. “On defense, we really stressed building a wall in the middle and setting edges to funnel runs back to pursuit. On offense, it was controlling the clock and sustaining drives that ended in points. On special teams, it was key to keep the ball away from their return speed. We did this on kick-offs, and did not need to on punts because we did not punt in the game. This only allowed Wahlert 41 offensive snaps.”

Holding a now even season record of 3-3, but those three victories all coming in Class 2A District 4 play to give them an undefeated upperhand in their quest for a fifth consecutive district championship without a loss in league play, the Indians are next scheduled to host Jesup for the final home game of their regular season schedule this Friday, October 7 in a single game that begins at 7 p.m. and will not include an initial freshman/sophomore contest. The J-Hawks have yet to find the win column in District 4 play and come off a 70-21 loss at home to North Fayette Valley this past Friday, with their only win on the season in six tries coming against a yet winless Postville squad in this season’s second game.
