Candidates in several contested races express their views prior to November 8 election as absentee voting now gets underway

Tuesday, November 8 is scheduled as the 2022 General Election to determine which candidates will be elected by voters to leadership positions at the national, state and local levels of government. A Notice of Election with a listing of candidates, polling sites and other pertinent local election information is printed on Page 28 of this week’s print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

INFORMED CHOICES - EARLIER
In-person absentee voting for this year’s election begins Wednesday, October 19 and can be done at the Allamakee County Auditor’s Office in Waukon through 4 p.m. Monday, November 7, the day before this year’s election. Regular open hours for the Auditor’s Office are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Allamakee County Auditor’s Office will also be open for in-person absentee voting Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Additional absentee voting information can be found in the advertisement on Page 7 of this week’s edition of The Standard.

With an increased demand for absentee ballots in recent years, The Standard has opted to publish its usual candidate questionnaire in multi-candidate contested races earlier this year, in the interest of informing voters who may be utilizing the absentee balloting process to cast their vote early, as well as for those seeking additional information about candidates in order to conduct their own further research prior to voting on the November 8 General Election Day. The series of questions asked and each candidate’s responses to the front page of this week’s edition and continue to additional pages throughout this week’s issue.

The questionnaires were sent to candidates who are vying for a position that had more candidates running for the position than the ballot instructions indicate to vote for at various levels of legislative governmental offices. The questions and responses for Iowa Governor are intended to be included in a future edition of The Standard, as not all candidates in that race met the deadline for inclusion in this week’s edition.

OTHER BALLOT ITEMS
In addition to political offices on this year’s General Election ballot, Allamakee County voters will also note two other ballot items not pertaining to electing of candidates, both of them requiring a “Yes” or “No” vote and a simple majority to pass. In one of those items, an amendment to the Iowa Constitution will be on the ballot asking voters if the State of Iowa should recognize the right to bear arms as a fundamental individual right. The other non-candidate item on the ballot will be the conversion of Veterans Memorial Hospital from City of Waukon ownership to Allamakee County ownership. Final informational meetings regarding that conversion are scheduled for Tuesday, October 26 in Waukon and Tuesday, November 1 in Postville. Additional information about those meetings and the proposed conversion can be found on Page 5 and Page 6 in this week’s edition.

Those who have election questions should call the Allamakee County Auditor’s offi ce at 563-568-3522.
