Gustave F. Kerndt VFW Auxiliary Post #5981 in Lansing has announced the 2022 Red, White and Blue National Anthem Singing Contest winners at the Department (State) level of competition. A pair of sisters from the Lansing area were named among the best in the state of Iowa taking part in this year’s competition.

Monica Davis, a senior student at Kee High School in Lansing, was named the First-Place winner at the State level in the Grades 9-12 Division and received a certificate and $25 award. Laira Davis, a sixth grade student at Lansing Middle School, was named the Third-Place winner in her grades K-8 Division at the State level and received a certificate and $10 award.

Laira Davis is now singing the National Anthem for all home athletic events at Kee High School. Both young ladies also advanced to the National level of the singing competition but were not selected among the top placewinners at that level of competition. VFW Auxiliary #5981 sponsored both Monica and Laira Davis and congratulates each of them.

The contest consisted of two grade Divisions: K-8 and 9-12. Contestants began by competing at the local VFW Auxiliary level. The winners from each Auxiliary advanced to the District competition with top District finishers then advancing to the State competition.  There is one National winner in each grade division, with awards for first, second and third place in each grade division.

The contest is designed to promote patriotism and encourage youth to learn the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner” while displaying their creativity and vocal talent.

The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest Veterans’ service organizations and its members are the relatives of those who have served in a location of foreign conflict. There are nearly 470,000 members representing all 50 states and they volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support Veterans, military service personnel and their families.
