The third consecutive time qualifying for the Class 2A State Meet by the Waukon boys cross country team ended up being charmed, as the distance Tribe brought home its highest State Meet finish in 18 seasons and finished just seven points beyond the last of the top-three teams that bring home a team trophy. The Indian distance dandies ran to a fourth-place team finish among the Class 2A elite at this season’s grand finale held Friday, October 28 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course near Fort Dodge, scoring 127 team points to finish just seven points behind the final trophy-winning third-place finish claimed by the same defending State Champion Tipton team that edged the Tribe by eight points just over a week earlier at its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Monticello.
“Our fourth-place team finish at State is our best finish since the 2004 team finished third at State,” Waukon boys cross country coach Tara Stein said. “I am so proud of how hard the guys competed Friday! They have trained and competed hard all season long, and for them to finish among the top teams in 2A, how cool is that? Of the boys teams that qualified and ran at the State Meet over last weekend, we placed the highest of any area teams, making our performance a little extra special. Thank you to everyone who made the trip to Fort Dodge last Friday to cheer us on as well as all the support over the course of the season!”
