Two losses for Waukon girls basketball team include 73-70 in double OT at MFL, 68-49 to native stand-out’s Wahlert squad

Waukon native still a winner at “home” ... Dubuque Wahlert head coach Kris Spiegler, a former stand-out player for the Waukon girls basketball team, gives direction to her team in the Tuesday, November 29 Indian loss at home, 68-49, to Spiegler’s Golden Eagles. A 1978 graduate of Waukon High School, Spiegler held the Waukon girls basketball career scoring record with a total of 2,481 points as a forward in the six-on-six style of play, a total that still stands as the second-most points ever scored by a Waukon girls basketball player. Tribe’s second-leading scorer Kris Spiegler guides Golden Eagles past her alma mater

The Waukon girls basketball team had a busy early part of this past week for its only competition of the week, ending up on the short end of back-to-back nights of results in non-conference action. The Lady Indians had a Monday, November 28 road contest at MFL/MarMac ripped away at the very final buzzer in a 73-70 double overtime heartbreaker against the Bulldogs before having one of the best Waukon girls basketball players in program history return to her alma mater as a head coach Tuesday, November 29 and have her Class 3A 15th-rated Dubuque Wahlert squad hand the bucket Tribe a 68-49 defeat.

The Indians are next scheduled to play another pair of back-to-back nights of competition to end this week, hosting Caledonia, MN Thursday, December 8 and then traveling to Crestwood to open Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play Friday, December 9 in a girl/boy quadrangular. They will then host New Hampton in another NEIC girl/boy match-up Tuesday, December 13 before doing likewise with Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, December 16 and then playing Dubuque Hempstead at Upper Iowa University in Fayette Saturday, December 17.
