Mia Kurth wins five of six matches to finish third among 100-pound elite
A trio of Waukon girls wrestling team members were part of the first-ever State Wrestling Tournament sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville Thursday and Friday, February 2-3. Those three Lady Indians gained valuable experience at this year’s season grand finale, winning seven of their 12 matches wrestled to help score 31 team points and finish in a two-way tie with West Lyon for 37th place out 137 teams scoring at the tournament and 157 overall teams having wrestlers competing in this year’s State Tournament.
Those three Lady Indians included juniors Mia Kurth, at 100 pounds, and Kloe Hemmersbach, at 170 pounds, and sophomore Faith Cooper at 105 pounds. With all three having competed in the previous Girls State Wrestling Tournament sponsored by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association last season, their experience at this season’s first-ever sanctioned event yielded a variety of final results, with all three young ladies eligible to come back for at least one more season.
Kurth experienced the greatest success at this year’s senior grand finale, winning five of her six matches - four of them by fall - to finish in third place at 100 pounds. Hemmersbach evenly split her four matches wrestled in the 170-pound bracket to finish shy of the final placewinnings, with both of her wins coming by fall. Cooper ended up being dealt a pair of falls in her two matches wrestled at 105 pounds to also finish short of any placewinnings in her 32-wrestler bracket.
