Carol Howe

Carol Marie (Sass) Howe, 78, of Monona passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon Saturday evening, March 4, 2023. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona with Rev. Martin Coolidge as the celebrant. Burial will follow at Monona City Cemetery in Monona.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 9 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Monona. There will also be a one-hour visitation before mass at the church Friday.

She was born to William Charles Sass and Marie Marguerite (Schmitt) Sass in Monona April 4, 1944. She was baptized April 12, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Monona.

Carol attended and graduated from MFL High School in 1962. She stayed in Monona with her mother until she met George Joseph Howe of Lansing on a blind date with mutual friends. They married July 18, 1970 at St Patrick’s Church in Monona. Their union of 52 years brought four children and several grandchildren.

She enjoyed sitting on the front porch visiting with family and friends, reading, singing, puzzles, crocheting, and most of all playing cards, which was a lifelong hobby. Throughout her life she played piano, cornet, and accordion. She also loved traveling to places like Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Bahamas, and many of the states with the love of her life, George.

Carol is survived by her husband, George; four children: Michael Howe of Monona, Christopher Howe (Robin Laube) of Monona, Danielle (Roger) Hein of Blooming Prairie, MN and Andrea (Ronald) Pitzer, also of Monona; 13 grandchildren: Dracen Howe; Jessica (Ty), Justin (Jennifer), Jason, McKenna, Gabriel and Zachary Hein; and Dillon, Tryston, Chaise, Ethan, Gatlynn and Noah Pitzer; five great grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William John, Edward and Richard Sass; one granddaughter, Delandra Howe; one sister-in-law, Phebe Sass; her parents-in-law, Michael and Mary Howe; and four brothers-in-law: Orville Bratrud, Robert Howe, Edward Helgeson and Robert Jones.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation service in Monona is assisting the family with services.
