The Waukon boys golf team will return a trio of varsity letterwinners from last season’s squad that played to a 3-15 dual meet record last spring. Those three will lead a team that Coach Tharin Benson says surprises him with the number of kids reporting for early-season duty, as 23 young men are playing golf this season.

That veteran trifecta includes senior Cody Huinker and the junior pair of Dylan Hogan and Cashton Lloyd. “I’ll look for them to be at top of the leaderboards, and help others make proper in-round decisions,” Coach Benson said of his experienced returnees.

Those letterwinners all come from the two uppermost classes at the high school that each feature five players this season. The smallest class is the trio of sophomores playing rounds this spring. This year’s freshman class boasts just as many players in itself as both the senior and junior classes combined, and it is from that collection of 10 youngest high school competitors that Coach Benson looks to receive some significant contributions this spring.

The Indians were scheduled to get their 2023 campaign with back-to-back nights of road competition, at Decorah Monday, April 3 and at Oelwein Tuesday, April 4, but that April 3 date has been postponed. They will then host both South Winneshiek and Crestwood Monday, April 10 before playing both MFL/MarMac and Postville at Luana Tuesday, April 11.
