This week marks the one-year anniversary of the Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Postville  Medical Clinic. The new clinic opened July 5, 2022, replacing the Postville Medical Clinic owned and operated by Dr. Thomas McMullan.    The clinic began with Michelle Crary, Nurse Practitioner, providing patient care full-time in the clinic with Dr. McMullan remaining on, two days per week.

Crary came to the Postville Clinic with over 10 years of nursing experience at both Gundersen Health and Mayo Clinic in LaCrosse, WI as well as Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. After just one year, a nurse midwife/nurse practitioner and mental health nurse practitioner have both joined the health care team as well.

Katy Maker, Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner, visits the Postville Clinic every Wednesday to meet with expectant moms, delivering babies at Veterans Memorial Hospital when the time comes. She also sees patients as a nurse practitioner for all family practice cares.

Tara Fink, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, also visits the Postville Clinic to help meet the great need for mental health care in northeast Iowa, providing consultations and medication management for all mental health illnesses. Patients can self-refer to see Fink by calling the Postville Clinic at 563-864-7221.  Both Maker and Fink have office hours at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Waukon Clinic as well.

“We have truly filled a void in the Postville community with the opening of this clinic,” states Laura Baxter, Clinic Director of both the Postville and Waukon Clinics. “We are available for walk-ins each day, which is a large part of our business so we are thankful we are here for them. Michelle continues to accept new patients as she establishes her practice in the Postville community. Our entire staff, including Teresa Berg, our Receptionist; Shaina Kruger, our RN; and Casey Fisk, our Medical Assistant, are a very solid team offering exceptional care to our patients and community.”

These Postville Clinic staff members serve all immediate health concerns such as flu, COVID, sore throat, earache, and blood pressure issues; provide disease management such a diabetes, hypertension and digestive issues and offer annual wellness including well child visits from two days to 18 years, women’s health, medical annual wellness exams and sports physicals.

“Without the accessibility of this new clinic and our wonderful providers and staff, I don’t know where those numerous patients we have served in this first year would have gone to get the care they needed,” adds Baxter.  “We are happy to be here for people when they need us.”

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Postville Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., remaining open over the lunch hour. The clinic then does close from 1-2 p.m. each afternoon. New patients are being accepted for all providers at the Postville Medical Clinic. To make an appointment, call 563-864-7221.
