Duane “Dewey” DeWalle, 78, of Waukon died Friday, January 5, 2024 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI. A celebration of life with a light meal will be held Saturday, January 13 from 12-2 p.m. at the Waukon Golf & Country Club in Waukon.

Dewey was an avid sports fan; in his honor, we would like you to wear your favorite sports team attire. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Duane Lyola DeWalle was born September 29, 1945 in Cresco, the son of Lyola “Bud” and Bessie (Bilek) DeWalle. He attended elementary school and Cresco High School.

While at a gas station one day, Dewey met the woman who would end up being the love of his life, Maggie Johansen. The two were married July 8, 1970 at the Winneshiek County Courthouse.

Dewey began working as a mechanic for Leiran Auto Repair, eventually working for Alliant Energy and also serving on the union before retiring. He was a councilman from 1988-2007, and served as mayor in 2016 and 2017, all for the City of Waukon.

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon, where he served on the administrative board. He was also a member of the Waukon Golf & Country Club and Waukon Economic Development.

Sports were a big part of Dewey’s life and he could often times be found watching and rewatching sports events on TV, regardless of what or who was playing. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys, and while not a Kansas City Chiefs fan, he enjoyed watching Patrick Mahomes. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and when he was younger, playing slow pitch softball.

Survivors include his children: Rachael (Troy) Kastler of Woolstock, Missy (Darin) Carolus of Waverly and Amber (Corey Kobbervig) Hageman of Waukon; two sisters, LuJayne (George) Hovey and Betty Jo DeWalle, and one brother, Alvin (Lisa) DeWalle, all of Texas; nine grandchildren: Brooke and Gunnar Grotegut, Nathan and Jordan Kastler (and Ben), Brady (Lindsey Jackson), Dallas (Maddy Moser) and Autumn (Jacub Steiber) Hageman, Andrew Carolus, and Desiree (Derek) Baumler; three great-grandchildren, Zayne, Maison and Quinnleigh Howe; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maggie, in 2020; his beloved dog, George; a daughter, Justina; and a brother, Donnie.

Honorary urnbearers are Duane’s grandchildren.
