Waukon boys basketball team falls at MFL/MarMac, 76-51, in lone contest able to be played last week

Looking to find their first win of the new year, the Waukon boys basketball team traveled to MFL/MarMac Monday, January 8, a team riding a four-game win streak dating back to mid-December. Riding an early rollercoaster to a 23-22 lead early in the second quarter, the bucket Tribe fell off that early pace to score not much more than that total for the game’s reminder while the host Bulldogs tripled up their total in that same remaining timeframe to deal the Indians a 76-51 defeat.

Despite a career-high scoring effort by sophomore Colton O’Neill, as he tallied 16 points with strikes from all ranges, MFL outscored the Tribe by multiple baskets at all those ranges. The Bulldogs helped along their 52% shooting efficiency from two-point range with 15 steals and 22 assists while the Indians turned the ball over 19 times while converting at a 37% effectiveness and were outscored by a 40-28 margin from two-point range, 24-15 from beyond the three-point arc and 12-8 from the free throw line.

The Waukon basketball boys also had back-to-back nights of competition later in the week called off due to winter weather. A Friday, January 12 road date at Crestwood has been postponed to Saturday, January 20 and a Saturday, January 13 non-conference game against Wapsie Valley at the UIU Shootout hosted by Upper Iowa University in Fayette has been canceled with no current plans for being rescheduled.

Holding a 3-6 record, including a 2-3 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Indians were next scheduled to play at South Winneshiek in a non-conference match-up Tuesday, January 16 before hosting New Hampton Friday, January 19 and then making up that Crestwood postponement Saturday, January 20 in a pair of Northeast Iowa Conference contests to end this week. They are then scheduled to play three more games the following week, starting with a pair of non-conference games on back-to-back nights that include at Independence Monday, January 22 before hosting Prairie du Chien, WI Tuesday, January 23 and then welcoming Class 3A top-15 rated Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, January 26.
