The 2023-2024 wrestling season came to a close for all but three members of the Waukon wrestling team Saturday, February 10 in the mat Tribe’s Class 2A District Tournament hosted by Osage High School. Needing a top-two finish in their weight class bracket to extend their season to this year’s State Tournament coming up this week, wrestlers from eight different teams were vying for those top-two qualifying finishes, with the mat Tribe earning three of those, each in various fashion, and having several others in position to do so on the way to scoring 151 team points to finish third in the final team standings.

Those three top-two finishes were paced by a championship effort from senior Kale Berinobis at 106 pounds, who pinned his way to this season’s Class 2A District 6 crown to earn his first State Tournament qualification. After a first-round bye in his five-wrestler bracket, the first-year competitor for the Indians pinned freshman Myles Henn of Forest City in 1:51 and also pinned Crestwood sophomore Owen Corsmo in 4:40 to claim his title.

The other two Indian qualifications for the season grand finale came via runner-up finishes from the junior pair of 113-pounder Jayden Mara and 157-pounder Holten Palmer, and each came in different fashions. Mara received a first-round bye in his six-man bracket and edged out a 4-0 decision over Forest City sophomore Deegan Moore before falling to top-five rated Crestwood junior Mitchell Schmauss in the championship match. Mara’s second-place finish was solidified when Moore wrestled his way back to third place and could not challenge Mara for second place in a wrestleback opportunity due to already having been defeated by Mara in the championship semifinals.
