Kee girls track team qualifies six events for State Meet to pace fourth-place finish at Class 1A State Qualifying Meet

State Meet qualification in four events includes return in pair of hurdle races ... Kee girls track and field sophomore Addison Winters leads this line of hurdlers on the way to a sweep of the two individual hurdle events at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet at Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 9. Winters topped this 100 meter hurdle field in a time of 16.08 seconds and also won the 400 meter hurdles in a school record time of 1:08.53 that edged out that event victory by just fifteen-hundredths (.15) of a second. Winters also leaped 16’1.5” to finish second in the long jump and helped Kee’s sprint medley relay to a fourth-place finish in a time of 1:57.05, with both of those performances falling within the next-best 14 non-championship Class 1A performances to earn at-large State Meet qualifications. The Kee girls track and field team came away from its Class 1A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 9 knowing that at least three events would be moving on to every team’s ultimate destination with event championship victories. Within the next 24 hours, the Lady Hawks learned that their number of qualifications for this year’s Class 1A State Meet doubled with three at-large qualifications earned by performances that ranked within the top-14 non-championship performances at the 10 Class 1A State Qualifying Meets across the state of Iowa.
Those qualifying finishes for this season’s grand finale helped compile 74 team points for the Kee girls, placing them fourth in the final 14-team standings. Those six State Meet qualifications involve Lady Hawks that include a combination of a pair of veteran returnees and a trio of first-year high school competitors.

The Kee track and field ladies will now compete among the Class 1A elite in their six qualified events at the State Track and Field Meet this Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18. Details of those qualified events can be found in a shaded box elsewhere on this week’s Sports pages.
“The atmosphere the girls get to experience in Des Moines with Mike Jay on the PA (public address - announcing the meet) is unrivaled,” Coach Winters exclaimed. “It’s always an incredible experience for all of the track athletes!”
