Waukon boys track team has more than half of nine State Meet events finish within top-five, including pair in Class 2A

Just over a second off the 800 meter title ... Waukon boys track senior Wyatt Gulla crosses the congested finish line in a tight Class 2A 800 meter run battle at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18. Gulla finished fourth in that 800 meter race in a time of 1:56.61 that was just over a second off the championship time and just over a tenth of a second off the third-place podium clocking. He also anchored the track Tribe’s 4x800 relay to a fourth-place finish in a clocking of 8:02.14 and placed 11th in the 400 meter run in a time of 50.87 seconds at the last season grand finale of his high school career. Senior Ethan Kelly wins three State Championships in new Para Ambulatory division

The 2024 Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18 proved to be a strong showcase for the Waukon boys track and field team, with the Indians competing in a total of nine events at the season grand finale and having five of those result in top-five finishes and two more end up on the very brink of a top-10 finish among the elite in their respective divisions of competition. Among those top-end finishes were a trio of events that ended at the very top of their respective fields, and two others that claimed fourth-place finishes and resulted in the Indians scoring 10 team points and placing in a tie for 26th in the final team scoring field of 57 Class 2A teams.

Leading the way to those track Tribe high-end finishes were four seniors competing one last time on the big blue oval, several of them following multiple seasons of competing at that ultimate Iowa high school track and field destination. Skyler Dugan, Wyatt Gulla, Jack O’Neill and Ethan Kelly were each involved in events that finished among the top five of their fellow elite competitors in their respective events.
