Hemmersbach is double medal winner in throwing events, Johnson finishes in high jump top-10

The Waukon girls track and field team took a total of six events to this year’s ultimate high school track and field destination. Throughout the course of that three-day showcase of talent at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Thursday-Saturday, May 16-18, half of those Lady Indian events brought home results within the top 10 of their respective Class 2A elite fields, including a pair of medal-winning efforts.

Much like they’ve done all season, the senior leadership pair of Kloe Hemmersbach and Cameron Johnson recorded those track Tribe highlights. Each of them were making another multi-year return trip to the season grand finale, and each of them continued to prove they belong there with finishes among the top-10 individuals in their respective field event specialties.

Hemmersbach paced all the Indian event finishes, ending her high school career with a pair of throwing event efforts that earned her medal-winning honors within the final top-eight of each Class 2A event. The senior power source started both of the first two days of the State Meet launching her way to that elite recognition.

She opened the meet making her third consecutive appearance among the Class 2A shot put elite Thursday, May 16, blasting out initial throws of 36’7”, 37’5.25” and 34’10.50” in her preliminary flight, with that 37’5.25” effort placing her within the top nine individuals who advance to the final round of competition out of 24 initial competitors. In her three throws of that final round, Hemmersbach added throws of 35’10”, 35’11.75” and a 37’7” result that ultimately placed her eighth among that Class 2A elite field for the second consecutive season. West Lyon Inwood senior Jana Ter Wee repeated as the Class 2A shot put champion this year with her toss of 42’11”.
