Don R. Sommermeyer, 75, of New Albin died Sunday, June 23, 2024, at Glen Oak Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Urbandale. Friends may greet the family Friday, June 28 from 4-7 p.m. at the New Albin Community Center in New Albin, with a Masonic service to follow at 7 p.m. and Mike Root officiating. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.
Donald Robert Sommermeyer was born April 26, 1949, in La Crosse, WI, the son of Milton and Gertrude (Bechtel) Sommermeyer. Don was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters United Church of Christ in New Albin and graduated from Kee High School in Lansing in 1967 and also attended University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, WI.
August 17, 1974, he married Susan Grahlman at Grace United Methodist Church in New Albin. Don worked at Interstate Power Company in Lansing, and for the Local #139 out of Madison, WI, as a heavy equipment operator before retiring in 2010.
He was a member of Great Lights Lodge #181 in Decorah and Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite where he was a 32nd degree. Don enjoyed reading about history, detailing cars, and target shooting.
Survivors include his two sons, Eric (Kimberly) Sommermeyer of Waverly and Jon (Kandee Tower) Sommermeyer of New Albin; two grandchildren, Lukas and Karsten Sommermeyer; a brother, Gary Sommermeyer of South Bury, CT; a sister-in-law, Barb Grahlman of Postville; a niece, Brandi Bachman; and a nephew, Brian Grahlman.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Susan, who died in 2019; and a brother-in-law, Bob Grahlman.
Honorary casketbearers are Lukas and Karsten Sommermeyer. Tim Felton, Mike Root, Adam, Keith, and Stan Schwartzhoff, Robert Somermeyer, Russ Fenske, and Steve Meiners.
