Summer Reading Program to start at Robey Memorial Library

Robey Memorial Library’s “Read, Renew, Repeat” Summer Reading Program 2024 begins Monday, July 1 and runs through Wednesday, July 31. Activities include Reading Challenges with prizes for all ages, Kids and Teens Grab-and-Go Activity Bags, craft events and fine forgiveness. This summer’s activities are further described below.

For Kids: Infant-6th grade (completed)
The 4-Week Reading Challenge: Register at the front desk, pick up or print from the library website a reading log that features reading and activity challenges. Earn prizes and books by completing the tasks assigned to the squares. The more readers participate, the more prizes they will receive. Participants can display a “Library Champion” sign in their yard. Watch for these while driving around town.
Make & Take Crafts: Held every Wednesday in July, stop by between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. to make a craft to take home, including the following:
July 3 - Clay Leaf Craft
July 10 - Butterfly House
July 17 - 3-D Insect Mobile
July 24 - Wire Whisk Dragonfly
July 31 - Tissue Paper Painting

Grab and Go Activity Bags: Features fun, challenging projects to create at home. Available the second Wednesday of each month while supplies last.
Summer Explorers Series: Summer Explorers continues in July and August bi-weekly Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m., according to the following schedule:
July 3 - Marbled Shaving Cream Art
July 17 - Salt Painting
July 31 - Iowa PBS STEAM Stations with Stacie Steveson, Education Specialist
August 14 - TBD

Story Walk at the Allamakee County Fair: Wednesday, July 17-Sunday, July 21: Robey Memorial Library will be hosting a Story Walk featuring the hilarious children’s book “Interrupting Chicken” by David Ezra Stein. Families and children are encouraged to read the book by walking from page to page as they stroll the fairgrounds. The starting point of the Story Walk is at the Pavilion entrance, each stop will direct readers to the next and the Walk ends at the Fair Office.
Passport to Reading: Book club for kids grades 4th through 6th. Join the library as the group discusses a book read with an art theme July 11 and a school theme August 8. Passport to Reading meets once a month Thursday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. to discuss a book read, participate in fun book-related activities, and enjoy snacks. Teens: 7th-12th grades (completed)
Reading Challenge: Register at the front desk, pick up or print from the library website a Reading Challenge Brochure. Earn prizes and books by completing reading minutes and literary quests. Earn entries to prize drawings for a Waukon Bucks or book package. The more readers participate, the more prizes they earn.
Teen Book Clubs: Teen Summer Book Club - July’s book selection is “Undefeated” by Steve Sheinkin. Join the club Wednesday, July 10 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. for snacks and discussion. August’s book club meets Wednesday, August 7 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. for snacks and discussion of “The Rosewood Hunt” by Mackenzie Reed.
Classic Book Club for Teens: This club is reading and discussing classic titles, such as: “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck and “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Classic Book Club meets at 5:30 p.m. Mondays, July 8 and August 12.

Adults
Adults who participate in the 2024 Adult Reading Challenge through July will be entered into a drawing for a special prize. Read a title from one of 12 reading categories: Animal-themed; Based on a true story; Classic; From your childhood or youth; Nature-themed; Reader’s choice; Recycled (from a garage sale, second-hand store, friend, etc.); Science; Teaches you something; Tragedy; Travel-themed; and Weather-related. Complete an entry on the library website (www.waukon.lib.ia.us) or at the library. The Adult Reading Challenge continues through December 31.

Events for adults in July: Thursday Night Book Club: Discussing a title from a garage sale, second-hand sale, friend, etc. - Thursday, July 18 at 6 p.m.
Live & Learn: In Case of Emergency - Allamakee County Emergency Coordinator Corey Snitker presents a program on being prepared for an emergency, evacuation or a disaster Thursday, July 29 at 5:30 p.m.

Fine Forgiveness
For those who participate in one of the library’s Reading Challenges: children and teens who register for the Summer Reading Challenge in July, and adults who read at least one book for the 2024 Adult Reading Challenge in July can have overdue fines forgiven. (Be sure to remind the library staff of Challenge participation). Fine Forgiveness does not include lost or damaged items on a patron’s library account.
