by Joe Moses

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, July 15 to address a full agenda of matters including the consideration of the Resolution for the Destruction of Noxious Weeds, consideration of the appointment of a Harpers Ferry Library Board rural representative, and an update relating to the Lansing Police Department and New Albin law enforcement coverage.

The meeting was called to order by Board of Supervisors Chairperson Pro-Tem Mark Reiser with Supervisor Dennis Keatley present. Chairperson Dan Byrnes was not present due to a scheduled absence. There was no comment during the time allotted for Public Comment.

The meeting moved into the consideration of the Resolution for the Destruction of Noxious Weeds. Keatley read aloud the Resolution which specifies that landowners and those in possession or control of land within the county are required to “properly spray, cut, burn or otherwise destroy all noxious weeds” at the time each year as defined in the Resolution and “shall prevent said weeds from blooming or coming to maturity, and shall keep their lands free from such growth of any weeds as shall render the streets or highways adjoining said land unsafe for public travel.” The Resolution further specifies compliance dates and specific noxious weeds including:

“Primary Noxious Weeds: July 15, 2024 for Buckthorn, Bull thistle, Canada thistle, Field bindweed, Hoary cress (Perennial pepper-grass), Horse Nettle, Leafy Spurge, Musk Thistle, Perennial Sow Thistle, Quack Grass, Russian Knapweed, Tall Thistle and Palmer Amaranth.”

“Secondary Noxious Weeds: July 15, 2024 for Buckthorn Plantain, Cocklebur, Wild Sunflower, Curly Dock, Poison Hemlock, Puncturevine, Sheep Sorrel, Sour Dock, Smooth Dock Teasel, Velvetleaf (Butterprint), Wild Carrot, Wild Mustard, Multiflora Rose and Shattercane.”

Keatley read aloud the remainder of the Resolution which specifies that any noxious weeds shall be destroyed to prevent blooming and maturing additional seeds with the Weed Commissioner being authorized to have this maintenance performed with the expense assessed against the land. Following discussion, the Supervisors approved the Resolution. The full version of the Resolution for the Destruction of Noxious Weeds will be published in official county newspapers in the near future.

The Supervisors next addressed the consideration of the appointment of a Harpers Ferry Library Board Rural Representative. The reappointment of Brigid Cota of Harpers Ferry to that board position was approved. Quarterly Reports for the County Relief Office, Recorder, and Planning and Zoning were accepted and placed on file.
