The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers to assist with the serving of the meal associated with the annual Waukon Corn Days celebration scheduled for August 2-3 this year. The meal portion of the event is scheduled for Friday, August 2 from 4-8 p.m., and volunteers are being sought to help with serving the meal or handing out drinks during any of a trio of hour-and-a-half time-slot shifts of approximately 3:45-5:15 p.m., 5:10-6:45 p.m. or 6:40-8:10 p.m., with volunteers also needed for a clean-up shift following the street dance, from 11:15-11:45 p.m.
Those wishing to volunteer their time can either call the Waukon Chamber of Commerce office at 563-568-4110 or email waukonchamber@gmail.com.
The meal serving will take place on the initial block of West Street off Main Street, as it was done last year. The purchased meal will consist of a bratwurst or hot dog, sweet corn, chips, potato salad, watermelon, and a drink. Slices of pie from S&D Cafe will be available for purchase, the Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board will have its Dairy Wagon set up, and a free s’mores station will also be available for additional treats.
A Kids Zone is being planned in the Waukon State Bank parking lot, including inflatable bouncy houses and other activities to be enjoyed with a wristband purchase, from 4-8 p.m. The initial couple blocks of Main Street, west of the stoplights, will be closed down to traffic starting at 12 Noon Friday and remain closed into Saturday morning, with “Uptown Jazz” providing live music to dance and listen to from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday in front of Hartig Drug. A street dance with live music by Flatland Ridge will then take place on Main Street from 8-11 p.m. WW Homestead Dairy will also be hosting a drive-in “moo-vie” Friday evening, beginning at dusk.
Crazy Days specials and sidewalk sales will be offered throughout the two-day event by area businesses (see the promotions in the advertising printed on Pages 15-18 of last week’s [July 24] edition of The Standard). Those sales are being planned in conjunction with the State of Iowa Sales Tax Free weekend, also slated for August 2-3. Additional vendors will also be set up Saturday morning.
The annual WW Homestead Dairy Car, Truck & Bike Show is scheduled from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. A co-ed softball tournament is also planned for Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Waukon Softball Complex, and a cornhole (bags) tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Goodfella’s. Robey Memorial Library will be hosting a Chalk the Walk event Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and again Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and young readers can also take part in the Main Street Story Walk on Main Street in Waukon Friday and Saturday as well. The Allamakee County Veterans Museum will also be open for tours and will be showing a video of Waukon from the 1940s, along with photos of past Corn Days celebrations, both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
