Paul E. Ryan, 95, of Oelwein went to be with his Lord Monday, August 26, 2024, at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein, surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, August 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, with military honors by the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.

Paul Edward Ryan was born August 30, 1928, in Waukon, the son of Thomas and Kathryn (Buckley) Ryan. In 1946, he graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in Waukon. September 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Anna Mae Haas at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon. The couple moved to Fort Smith, AR for two years while Paul proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
While in Arkansas, they were blessed with a daughter, Barb. In 1953, Paul and Anna Mae moved to Oelwein, where they were blessed with two more daughters, Mary and Jane. Paul owned and operated Modern Cleaners in Oelwein. Later he was a route supervisor for City Laundry in Oelwein.
He was a member of the Oelwein City Council for 23 years, Mayor Pro Tem, Oelwein Airport Commission, Oelwein Civil Service Commission, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, Sacred Heart School Board, Sacred Heart Parish Board of Directors, 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Jaycees, Rotary, and 60-year member of the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein and Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard. Paul also volunteered with Special Olympics. He was an avid sports fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, New York Yankees and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Paul is survived by his three daughters: Barb Fischer of Green River, WY, Mary Ryan of Cedar Rapids and Jane (Bartt) Carney of Centerville; four grandchildren: Rich (Amy) Fischer, Rob (Carrie) Fischer, Breckyn Carney and Brynlee Carney; 10 great-grandchildren: Ryan Fischer, Austin Anderson, Carter (Cedar) Anderson, Chance Anderson, Brooklyn Fischer, Steffen Fischer, Jon Fischer, Everlee Fischer, Karli Fischer and Tucker Fischer; two great-great-grandchildren: Cree Anderson and Wright Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna Mae, June 29, 2022; his brothers, Matt Ryan and Roger Ryan; and his sisters, Abigail Osterholm and Sister Romana Marie Ryan.
