The 2024 season for the Waukon football team got off to a slow start at home against Class 4A ninth-rated Decorah Friday, August 30. The visiting Vikings scored on three of their first four offensive possessions, as well as on the Indians’ own first series of the contest, on the way to handing the grid Tribe its first shut-out loss, 33-0, since the 2011 season, when Waukon football was last playing in the Class 3A ranks of Iowa high school football.
The Indians were limited to just 154 total yards in the contest, with just 37 of those coming on the ground as the visiting Vikings wrapped up nine tackles for loss that included six quarterback sacks that yielded a negative two (-2) yards rushing on a team-high 15 carries for senior quarterback Jaxon Brinkman. Meanwhile, Decorah more than doubled that Tribe offensive total with 368 yards of total offense that included 249 rushing yards, with nearly half of those total yards coming on just four scoring plays the Vikings created on offense.
The Indians will hit the road this Friday, September 6 to face another ranked opponent as they travel to Class 1A 10th-rated MFL/MarMac, which comes off its best season in program history with a Class 1A State Runner-Up finish last season. The Bulldogs squeaked out a 9-7 victory this past Friday with a late field goal at Crestwood, one of the Tribe’s fellow Class 2A District 3 squads this season.
