ACSD Board of Directors hears updates since new school year has started; Jesse Delaney sworn in as new board member, Erik Helgerson is new president

The Allamakee Community School District School (ACSD) Board of Directors met for its regular monthly meeting Monday night, September 16.

Under the Consent Agenda, the following personnel matters were approved (pending a satisfactory background check): Kids Club Staff; Kelly Ryan-Urell, High School Paraprofessional; Kris Rausch, Middle School Play Director; and Ben Pline, Assistant 7th and 8th grade football coach. Resignations from Hallie Evans and Molly Ottaway from their elementary paraprofessional positions were also approved. Out-of-state field trips for FFA members to attend the National Convention in Indianapolis, IN in October and for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members to attend the FBLA National Convention in Anaheim, CA in June 2025 were approved. Three open enrollments out of the district and one open enrollment in were approved, as was renewing the annual Hudl subscription for sports teams.

During the Communications time of the meeting, there was discussion on the most recent Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) results.

During the department updates, Superintendent Jay Mathis noted that this year’s enrollment numbers are similar to last year’s numbers. Board Secretary Jaime Curtin has been working on the Certified Annual Report.

The walls are going up for the Construction Class student-built house and Mathis thanked Mike and Linda Ferring for giving students the opportunity to build this year. Mathis also thanked retiring board member Al Rissman for his service to ACSD over the years. He praised Rissman’s leadership abilities as the board president through the good times and the challenging times.

In her report, Waukon High School Principal Jennifer Garin noted that the Vocational Partner Meeting for the CTE partners will be held September 18. She also reported that the Construction Class students are off to “a great start” on the student-built house. Students in the Exploring Computer Science class have been learning about artificial intelligence. There are six seniors and ten juniors in the NICC Welding Class this year, and they will be working to complete their OSHA 10 certifi cation. FBLA has 144 students signed up this year. The Little Switzerland FFA Chapter kicked off its year with a Tailgate Party August 30.
