Whether it was the unlucky fate of playing a game on Friday the 13th, or perhaps the more unlucky numbers of playing at Class 3A fifth-rated Independence and giving up four interceptions, the end result was a most unfortunate 35-8 loss for the Waukon football team in its final non-district game of this 2024 season Friday, September 13. Playing the highly-regarded host Mustangs to a 0-0 standstill through the first quarter and a half, the big play explosiveness Waukon football head coach Chad Beermann had pointed out in Independence’s first two games of this season suddenly thrust its misfortune on the grid Tribe and came in all aspects of the game for a 14-0 halftime deficit amassed over a span of just four minutes and a 21-8 outscoring in the second half that further sealed the Indians’ fate.
The Indians will now return home for the first time since their season-opener three weeks ago, hosting North Fayette Valley in a game that not only celebrates Waukon’s 2024 Homecoming but also opens Class 2A District 3 play for both squads. The Tigerhawks are on a two-game win streak coming into the ballgame, following a 42-14 season-opening road loss to this same Independence team with back-to-back wins over Sumner-Fredericksburg, 42-24 at home September 6, and at Denver this past Friday night by a score of 54-15.
