John F. Hausman, 89, of Waukon died Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Private family graveside rites will be held in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon at a later date with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements for the family.
John Frederick Hausman was born May 21, 1935, in Waukon, the son of Fred Lincoln and Bernice Mae (Rost) Hausman. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. John graduated from Waukon High School in 1953, attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, where he excelled on the swim team until receiving a degree in geology. He served in the United States Army and Reserves from 1957 until 1963, receiving intelligence training and certification.
While living and working in Cedar Rapids, he married Jane Audrey Engelking June 30, 1963 at Salem United Methodist Church. They moved to Waukon, where John went to work for his father at H & H Shoe Store. John and Jane took over the business and ran it for over 40 years, before finally closing in 1997. He then very much enjoyed working for the Allamakee County Soil and Water Conservation Service for about 10 years where his knowledge of local geography, geology, and history was put to good use.
After celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013, Jane’s health declined and John became her caregiver. After Jane’s passing, his dog Farfel provided constant companionship.
John was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon and was a former member of the Jaycees. He occupied his later years making walking sticks and deer-antler knives in his basement workshop. John was an avid fisherman and hunter his whole life.
Survivors include his son, Fred (Nancy) Hausman of Grand Rapids, MI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jane in 2016; and his sister, Barbara (Eaton) Cote’.
