Volunteers needed to collect LMI surveys being filled out by Waukon residents in near future

Waukon residents will be completing a low-to-moderate income (LMI) survey in the coming weeks, and the City of Waukon is looking for volunteers to help collect the surveys. Waukon City Clerk Sarah Snitker plans to have the surveys mailed out to residents by the end of September, and she is seeking volunteers to help collect the surveys that Waukon residents will be asked to tape to their exterior household doors one night in October for convenience and in order to avoid household interruption, with that specific night yet to be determined.

Snitker says the collection timeframe would likely be from 4-8 p.m. on that October evening yet to be determined. She says volunteers can help collect surveys that entire four-hour timeframe or can volunteer for any number of hours they are able to help within that timeframe. Anyone wishing to volunteer to collect the surveys is asked to call Snitker at 563-568-3492 or email her at cityclerk@cityofwaukon.com.

The surveys themselves are required by the State of Iowa every three years to see if the City is eligible to apply for certain grant funding through the State of Iowa. The last LMI survey completed by the City of Waukon was in 2015. The immediate purpose of this new survey would be to determine the City of Waukon’s eligibility to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) through the Iowa Economic Development Authority that could result in the awarding of up to $500,000 in grant money to help fund sanitary sewer system improvements and water system improvements.

Snitker says a certain number of surveys have to be returned in order to determine the City’s application eligibility, so participation is strongly encouraged. She describes the surveys as being a single folded sheet that will have an explanatory letter and a brief “check list” survey that will ask residents if they are in favor of such funding programs, in addition to providing the number of residents living in their household and whether or not their household income is above or below a certain level.

Snitker says the surveys are meant to be anonymous, requiring no names or addresses to be included on the survey. They can be returned directly to the Waukon City Clerk’s office in City Hall, or may be taped to a household’s doorway for collection, as described above.

Anyone with further questions about the survey or the volunteer collection process is asked to contact Waukon City Clerk Sarah Snitker through the email or phone contact information previously listed above.
