A final regular season home game and final match-up in Eight-Player District 3 resulted in the Kee football team wrapping up both those aspects of this season’s schedule in victorious fashion, further solidifying automatic State Play-Off qualification in the process for a second consecutive season. With the Hawk defense turning in its second consecutive shining effort without an offensive touchdown - its third such defensive result of this season, Kee head coach Chad Winters felt his team’s offensive effort could have been even brighter than it was in what ended up being a 44-0 Hawk victory.
That Kee offensive effort racked up 412 total yards, including 278 yards and one touchdown through the air that saw two players eclipse the 100-yard receiving mark, with 132 more yards and five touchdowns coming on the ground. The Hawks, however, had nearly as many of their offensive drives end up shy of any points as they had find the scoreboard in the ballgame, with three of those possessions being ended by interceptions.
Although the win further solidified Kee’s current third-place toe-hold in the Eight-Player District 3 standings with a 4-2 mark in District 3 play in an overall 5-2 season record, the Hawks still have the possibility of having that standing improved to second place for State Play-Off purposes. With only a non-district game left on their regular season schedule, the Hawks could get some play-off help from Turkey Valley this coming Friday, October 18, as the Trojans (3-4 overall, 3-2 in District 3) host the Riceville team (5-1 overall, 4-1 in District 3) that sits just ahead of the Hawks in the District 3 standings. A Turkey Valley win by at least a 17-point margin would force a three-way tie for second place in the final District 3 standings that would then end up in Kee’s favor following a series of tie-breakers that would ultimately be decided by alphabetical order between the three squads, leading to a further possibility of hosting a first-round play-off game for the Hawks.
Prior to any State Play-Off consideration, however, there is still some regular season business to take care of as the Hawks travel to Edgewood-Colesburg this Friday, October 18 for a non-district match-up to wrap up their regular season schedule. The Vikings are undefeated so far this season with an average margin of victory of 63-22 in those seven triumphs, coming off an 84-31 road victory over Calamus-Wheatland this past Friday, October 11 and also holding a 66-6 season-opening win over Central Elkader for the only common opponent shared between the Vikings and Hawks this season.
